Morocco-China, Economics, 11/27/1998

Morocco intends to sign a deal with China for the construction of a nuclear plant to generate electricity, the spokesman of the Moroccan government announced on Thursday.

"It will be a small nuclear plant to generate electricity and will be under the supervision of the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)," Khalid Alioua told the press after a government council meeting.

The 10 Megawatt capacity plant will installed in the region of Marrakesh (southern Morocco). The Moroccan National Bureau for Electricity, which took part in drawing up this project, said that building this reactor will be carried out in the city of Tantan to supply electricity for a sea water desalinization station.

An agreement in this respect, the spokesman continued, will be signed in Beijing during the visit of Moroccan Prime Minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi to China on December 3 - 8.
