Confrontation with Israeli forces continues in south Lebanon
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 11/26/1998

Israeli occupation troops shelled a number of towns and villages in the central sector of south Lebanon.

Lebanese security sources said Israel's heavy artillery shelled Toulin, Sawwanneh, Qabriha, Zouter, Mifdoun, Wadi Salawqi, and Wadi Hujeir. The sources added that the shelling coincided with intensive sorties carried out by Israeli warplanes over the central and western sectors.

The Israeli planes also carried out fake raids over al-Tuffah district and fired flares after they were intercepted by the anti-aircraft guns of Lebanese Army and resistance.

Earlier, the occupation troops attacked with heavy artillery areas adjacent to the occupied part of south Lebanon and the western Bekaa. The artillery shelling was accompanied by intensive sorties carried out by Israeli jets, which also carried out provocative raids over the entire region.

In retaliation Lebanese resistance forces launched operations against the Israeli-allied South Lebanon Army militia position in the Sujoud area. Clashes were reported between the resistance forces and both Israeli soldiers and SLA militia members manning the position.

On Wednesday evening, Lebanese resistance forces attacked Israeli - SLA militia positions in Qantara and Qsseir inside the occupied zone of south Lebanon. In a statement, the Lebanese resistance said its forces rocketed and machine-gunned Qantara position where a 25-minute clash erupted between the freedom fighters and soldiers manning the military position.

The resistance statement added that all front detachments were destroyed, a vehicle was damaged, and more than two soldiers were killed or wounded as a result of the clash, while fighters returned safely to base. The statement added that another group of fighters rocketed and mortared Osseir position, which was directly hit.

Meanwhile, the April Understanding monitoring committee will hold a meeting in the Lebanese border town of Naqoura next Tuesday.

Members of the committee will discuss several Lebanese complaints lodged against Israel for bombardments that led to the injury of a number of civilians in south Lebanon areas and to the damage of houses and properties in the region.
