Lebanese President Emile Lahoud assumed his official responsibilities from former President Elias Hrawi today after performing the constitutional oath before the Parliament council in the presence of Parliamentary Speaker Nabih Berri. Go

An Egyptian delegation arrived in Addis Ababa today under the chairmanship of the assistant foreign minister. Diplomatic sources said that the Egyptian delegation's visit to Ethiopia comes in implementation of the agreement that took place between the two countries after talks between their foreign. Go

The criminal court in the Algeria's Tizi Ouzou province on Monday sentenced five persons to death in absentia under charges of joining the Armed Islamic Group and deliberate killing. The Algerian daily al-Khabar said that security forces arrested seven gunmen from the Armed Islamic Group in Sidi Bel Abbes province and another gunman in Tizi Ouzou province. Go

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak received a detailed report from Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa on the results of Moussa's communications and consultations with high-ranking officials in Oman and Kuwait, in addition to the outcomes of the first session of the Egyptian - Kuwaiti high joint committee, which concluded yesterday. The secretary general of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement, Ramadan Abdullah Shalah, confirmed that there will be no Palestinian civil war and that his movement will not use violence against the Palestinian government. In a lecture in Damascus, Ramadan Shalah, added that his movement will amend the Palestinian national charter as the Palestinian leadership has pledged this amendment to remove references to the destruction of Israel. The Sudanese authorities announced that the disarmament process of the country's southern factions that had signed a peace agreement with the government has ended in success, as the process aimed at halting confrontations between two factions among the eight groups and ending the spread of weapons in Khartoum. Sources in the party of the Algerian Peaceful Society Movement said that its Shura council, the highest body in the party, will discuss at the beginning of the coming month nominating the chairman of the movement, Sheikh Mahfouz Nehnah, to participate in the presidential elections that are to be held in April. Nehnah participated in the presidential elections in 1995 and won the second most votes after president Zeroual, with 25% of the total votes. Go

Djibouti on Monday informed the Arab League of its decision to sever diplomatic relations with Eritrea. This was expressed in an official memorandum the Arab League received through Djibouti's permanent representative. Go
