Regional, Politics, 11/24/1998
At the conclusion of their three-day meetings on Monday in Damascus, chaired by the Saudi minister of Justice Dr. Abdullah Bin Muhammad Ibrahim al-Sheikh, the bureau of the Arab Justice ministers released a statement underlining the importance of drawing up a mechanism to carry out the "Arab anti-terrorism pact" approved by the councils of Arab ministers of the Interior and Justice at their recent joint meetings.
Arab states concerned with fighting crime and with social justice will meet at the conference, to be held in the year 2000 at the headquarters of the UN, in which further development will be discussed. There will be the setting up of a ministerial committee from the council of Arab ministers of justice and the interior.
The statement included the results of the technical committees assigned to unify Arab legislation, propose a united Arab law to regulate prisons, propose an Arab united civil law and united Arab civil and criminal law, and publish the Arab guide for Arab experts.
The statement highlighted Arab efforts in the preliminary conference for the International Criminal Court which was held in Rome.
It, in particular, noted Syria's active participation to convene a meeting for experts concerned to evaluate and follow up its implementation. The statement underlined the importance of coordination among concerned states in organizing symposia on informatics, and to form a technical committee to study and evaluate the legislative directory on Arab children's rights.
