Syrian President receives Armenian foreign minister

Syrian President Hafez al-Assad received Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanyan and members of his accompanying delegation on Sunday at al-Shaab palace. The Armenian minister conveyed a message to President al-Assad from the Armenian president on bilateral relations.

Discussions dealt with recent developments in the region, conditions of littoral states on the Caspian Sea, and means of developing bilateral relations in different areas.

Following the meeting, the Armenian FM described his meeting with President al-Assad as very fruitful, stressing that Syrian - Armenian relations are very good.

In a news conference held later in the day, the Armenian FM said his visit to Syria was "very successful," adding that talks dealt with bilateral relations, ways of enhancing them, developments in the region and issues of common interest.

Replying to a question on whether he discussed with President al-Assad the recent tensions that erupted in the relations between Syria and Turkey, he said: "We discussed problems in the region and there is a common denominator between us and Turkey since we are neighbors. We are all deeply concerned over Turkey's treatment with its neighbors."

He added that, "Such treatment does not help consolidate security and stability in the region." The Armenian foreign minister asserted his country's keendesireness to develop ties with Syria, noting that the two countries' higher committee is due to hold a meeting in Yerevan next month to discuss economic relations and ways of boosting cooperation in different areas.
