Annan backs extension of Iraq humanitarian program
Iraq-UN, Economics, 11/20/1998
UN spokesman Fred Eckhard said today that UN Secretary General Kofi Annan recommended the extension of the Iraqi humanitarian program for 180 days, as low oil prices have caused a shortfall of around $1 billion in Iraqi oil revenues compared to the amount allowed.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Muhammad Saeed al-Sahaf sent a letter to Annan asking for a two-month extension to make up for the shortfall, Eckhard said.
The oil-for-food program is due to be discussed in the UN Security Council on Monday.
