Arab conference on atomic energy winds up in Tunis

The 4th Arab conference on the use of atomic energy for peaceful ends held here earlier this week recommended the use of atomic reactors for electric power production and sea water desalination.
The conference, that was attended by delegates from the 13 member countries of the Arab atomic energy agency (AAEA) and some 200 Arab and foreign searchers also recommended the setting up of radioactivity monitoring bodies in Arab countries and the promotion of research on the elimination of radioactive wastes.
Other recommendations were related to the use of recycled water and nuclear technology in agriculture, the consolidation of Arab cooperation in atomic equipment maintenance and staff training and the promotion of research on the extraction of uranium from phosphates.
participants in the scientific gathering traded information on scientific innovations and the use of atomic energy in industry, medicine, and agriculture while stressing the need to respect international standards to secure human safety and environment protection.
The Tunis-based AAEA is a specialized body stemming from the Arab League. It gathers 13 countries, namely Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria and Tunisia.
