Syrian studies uplifting restrictions on car imports
Syria, Economics, 11/20/1998

The Syrian government is currently studying issuing a law to lift restrictions on importing cars through the private sector to deal with a legal loophole that occurred when applying law N5 from 1991, encouraging Arab and foreign investment in Damascus.

This loophole was allowing private companies to import cars without paying taxes or customs and renting or selling the vehicles later.

Sources from automobile manufacturers in Egypt told ArabicNews.com that they have received more than one message from private auto-importing Syrian companies on which it called for offers on prices for models produced in Egypt during the current year and in the middle of the coming year to pave for issuing this law.
