Lebanon, Politics, 11/20/1998
The Lebanese Cabinet on Thursday held its final session at Baabda palace under the chairmanship of outgoing Lebanese President Elias Hrawi, also attended by Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
In a speech, Hrawi expressed thanks for Syria under the leadership of President Hafez al-Assad in "supporting Lebanon for its own interest." The Lebanese president spoke about the achievements realized under his reign, and noted the Lebanon was able to maintain rehabilitation following the end of the civil war and the elimination of "rebellion."
The Lebanese President regretted that the "Lebanese displaced could not be brought back to their areas and still I do not see Lebanon liberated from the Israeli aggression."
For his part, Hariri praised the role played by President Hrawi in restoring stability, security and great achievements to Lebanon. He stressed Lebanon's commitment to principles concerning cooperation and coordination with Syria and mobilizing all efforts and diplomatic works to end the Israeli occupation of "our occupied lands."
Hariri continued, "This phase is that of remarkable Syrian-Lebanese relations and the birth of the treaty of fraternity, cooperation and coordination between the two countries as well as setting the foundations of political, economic, security and cultural bilateral ties."
