Arab League coordinates with Libya at UN on Lockerbie
Libya-Regional, Politics, 11/19/1998

Arab League Secretary-General Esmat Abdul Meguid assigned the AL ambassador to the UN, Hussein Hassounah, to coordinate with the Libyan juridical official dealing with Lockerbie incident, Hamid al-Maqhour, and to "support Libya's demands concerning its guarantees to carry out UN Security Council resolution no. 1192."

The AL chief told the London-Based al-Hayat daily that the Arab position concerning Lockerbie has not changed. "We totally support the Libyan stand over this issue." He stressed Libya's right to have "necessary guarantees" during the trial of the two suspected Libyans, Khaleifah Fahima and Abdubasit al-Miqrahi.

The paper added that Abdul Meguid said he sent a message to the Dutch authorities calling for talks with Libya conducive to guaranteeing a fair trial.

Meanwhile, Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa expressed his conviction that the Lockerbie incident has surpassed the deadlock and is proceeding towards detente.
