Moroccan jurist sworn in as member of international penal court for former Yugoslavia
Morocco, Judicial, 11/18/1998
Moroccan jurist, Mohamed Bennouna, was sworn in as member of the international penal court in charge of trying persons who perpetrated serious crimes against humanity in former Yugoslavia, the Moroccan embassy in Holland said in a release faxed to MAP.
The Moroccan jurist was elected last October by the United Nations general assembly, for a three-year mandate by 98 votes out of a list of nine candidates nominated by the security council.
Bennouna, who is the second Arab and fourth Muslim judge to sit in the court, was elected together with two other magistrates, namely David Anthony Hunt (Austria) and Patrick Robinson (Jamaica).
Born in 1943 in Marrakesh, Bennouna was successively member of the Moroccan delegations to the UN conference on sea law and to the international court of justice and served as advisor for several sessions of the general assembly.
He wrote several books on international law and was awarded several distinctions, mainly Morocco's national culture prize, Yemen's medal of culture and a French decoration.
