Morocco celebrates independence day
Morocco, History, 11/18/1998
Morocco celebrates this Wednesday the 43rd anniversary of its independence, a highly significant event that illustrates the triumph of the national cause and the advent of a new era of freedom and emancipation.
The celebration of the event provides the opportunity to meditate on the teachings and the value of the epic of the King and the people for the recovery of independence and the perfection of the national territorial integrity.
The Moroccan people's struggle for independence took a decisive turn in 1947 following the historic speech that the Late King Mohammed V made in Tangier --then international zone.
The speech clearly illustrated the firm and unshakable determination of the Late sovereign in his showdown with the colonial authorities.
The late King's resistance to the occupiers led them to impose a forced exile on the Nation's Father and symbol of national unity and the Royal family in 1953.
A vast movement of protest consequently broke out throughout the Kingdom to claim the return of the Late King and, hence, independence.
This was the Revolution of the King and the People that heralded the end of colonial occupation and Morocco's independence.
The colonial policy, aimed at subjugating the Moroccans, only consolidated their resistance and determination to defend their dignity and the symbols of their national sovereignty.
"We are happy to announce the end of the regime of tutorship and protectorate and the advent of an era of freedom and independence," the Late King Mohammed V said on November 18, 1955, two days after his return from exile.
It was on this memorable day that will remain an outstanding landmark in Morocco's history that the end of occupation was declared and sealed after long years of struggle and sacrifice.
This episode in the Moroccan nation's history illustrates the symbiosis between the throne and the people for the defense of the sacred values of the Kingdom.
The Moroccan people's enthusiasm to fervently defend its values, institutions and territorial integrity was kept alive until the Kingdom liberated its southern provinces from the yoke of Spanish occupation in 1975.
