Jordanian students arrested for demonstrating against Wye agreement
Jordan, Politics, 11/18/1998

The Jordanian authorities on Tuesday arrested the chairman of the Student Union at Mu'ta University in southern Jordan's al-Karak province after being dismissed from the university, following a demonstration recently held at the university in protest of the Wye Plantation agreement between the Palestinian government and Israel.

A statement released by the Mu'ta University Students Union stated that arresting the union's chairman, Ibrahim al-Minsi, is viewed as unprecedented event on the level of student movements in Jordan and another evidence of arresting the freedom of speech.

The statement called upon sides concerned, especially the university board, to intervene for the release of al-Minsi and to stop tough measures on students.

Earlier, Mu'ta University witnessed a demonstration in protest over the Wye agreement, after which 15 students were arrested, and the university board expelled seven of those students.
