Damascus denounces US Middle East position
Syria-USA, Politics, 11/17/1998
In a central rally held on Monday on the occasion of the 28th anniversary of the Syrian Correctionist Movement, when President al-Assad assumed power in 1970, the assistant regional secretary of the Baath party, Dr. Suleiman Qaddah, said that US policy is aligned to Israel.
"The US financial, military and political support and its unfair stand with Israel does not comply with its role as a sponsor of the Middle East peace process. In fact it acts as a factor that encourages Israel to violate international law," he said.
Qaddah added that genuine security is the overall aim, adding that through just and comprehensive peace, security can be ensured for all. He said that under the "leadership of President Hafez al-Assad, Syria is committed to the question of land and Arab rights. Syria calls upon Arabs to unify their ranks concerning the Arab-Israeli conflict."
He proceeded that,"Syria stands steadfast against all forms of pressure, conspiracies, military threats and aggressive alliances, equipped with its belief in the justness of its cause, unity of its people and the support by Arab people and her friends all over the world."
The Syrian party official went on to say that Syria calls for the "lifting of sanctions imposed on Iraq, Libya, and Sudan, and condemns the double-standard policy in dealing with international issues, the military escalation against Iraq and the attempts made to undermine its unity and territorial integrity."
He continued that Syria calls for dealing with all matters through dialogue and peaceful means, giving up the military option and objectively carrying out UN Security Council resolutions. He called for halting all forms of normalization with Israel as the first step towards forcing Israel to abide by international legitimacy resolutions to withdraw from Arab occupied territories and recognize Arab rights.
He stressed Syria's commitment to just and comprehensive peace and to resume negotiations with Israel from the point they broke off.
