Report: Jordan warns Palestinians not to carry out inter-Palestinian revenge acts
Jordan-Palestine, Politics, 11/17/1998

The Jordanian daily al-Majd has reported that the Jordanian government warned the Palestinian authorities against carrying out "revenge acts and killings of its opponents on the Jordanian arena regardless to reasons and motivations."

A well-informed source told the paper that during the two past weeks information came to the Jordanian government of the possibility that "Palestinian security forces would assassinate Jordanian figures, mainly the deputy secretary general of the Islamic Work Front, Dr. Humam Saeed, and Palestinian figures, namely the chairman of the political bureau of the Hamas movement, Khaled Mishal."

The paper was informed that the Palestinian National Security Council recently held a meeting under the chairmanship of Yasser Arafat in which it had asked the permission of the Palestinian president to liquidate Saeed in Jordan under the pretext that he released "a Fatwa in which he permits the Ezzeddine al-Qassam group to assassinate and kill men of the Palestinian Authority of policemen and politicians."

The paper said that several leaders of the Palestinian security factions who attended the meeting told Arafat that, "It seems that Israel is persistent to liquidate Mishal at Palestinian hands" so the matter will be seen as an "inter-Palestinian conflict."

Saeed has denied having released or signed such a Fatwa. He defied the security forces of both Israel and the Palestinian government to show such a Fatwa.
