Britain hopes to make a change in the Iraqi government
Iraq-UK, Politics, 11/17/1998

British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook has expressed hope of making a change in the Iraqi government. In a statement to the GMTV on Monday, he said, "I would very much like to see Saddam Hussein removed."

Cook added, "He rules by brutality and by fear," which prevents developing the Iraqi opposition to his government.

Cook's statements echoed similar statements made by US President Bill Clinton on Sunday in which he expressed hopes of changing the government in Baghdad.

Meanwhile, French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine has that France will not make any move to help in supporting "downing the Iraqi government."

Commenting on statements made by US President Bill Clinton in this respect, Vedrine added, "It is not among the traditions of French diplomacy to announce plans of this sort."
