Morocco, Politics, 11/16/1998

Morocco and Austria signed Friday in Rabat an accord destined to enhance cooperation between the two countries interior departments in the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime.

The accord was signed by Moroccan Minister of the Interior, Driss Basri and Austrian Peer Karl Schologel who paid a two day work visit to Morocco thursday and friday.

The accord calls for enhancing the exchange of data and coordination between the two countries security departments in the fight against arms trafficking, clandestine immigration, bank notes forging and stolen cars trafficking.

A Joint commission was set up to see to the implementation of the accord. It will meet every two years.

On the fringes of the signing ceremony, the Moroccan and Austrian ministers had talks on relations between Morocco and Austria, regionalization, the Casablanca subway project, civil servants training and topical issues of common concern.

The Austrian minister also conferred with Moroccan premier, Abderrrahmane Youssoufi, on partnership in various sectors, Morocco-European Union relations and Morocco's efforts to modernize its economy, administration, Justice, educational sector and northern zones.
