Moroccan-Portuguese high level meeting

Morocco and Portugal opened Friday in Lisbon their 4th high-level meeting to give a new momentum to partnership between the two countries in the economic, agricultural, industrial, scientific and cultural fields.
During the meeting, chaired by Moroccan premier Abderrahmane Youssoufi and Portuguese Peer, Antonio Guterres, the two countries will identify the priority sectors needing further coordination, the joint business opportunities offered in both countries and the preparations for the projected Euro-Mediterranean free trade zone.
The Moroccan-Portuguese High level annual meeting, which is held alternately in Rabat and Lisbon, was instituted by the friendship, neighborliness and cooperation treaty concluded by the two countries in 1994 to enhance bilateral relations in all fields.
According to figures released lately by "La banque Marocaine du Commerce Exterieur" (BMCE), trade exchanges between Morocco and Portugal exceeded in 1997 1 billion dirhams (USD 1 is about 9.3 DH). Morocco's exports to Portugal stood at 413.14 million DH while imports reached 684.71 million dh.
Iron, steel, synthetic fibers, wood, chemical products, plastic goods, paper and machinery are the major goods that Portugal exports to Morocco. Moroccan exports are made up of fish, phosphoric acid, tires, cork, fertilizers, citrus fruits, synthetic fabrics, phosphates and cotton threads.(MAP)AZ/
