New light for blind people, Moroccan develops guiding eye-glasses
Morocco, Science, 11/16/1998
A Moroccan has developed new eye glasses for blind people, guiding them safely on sidewalks and as they cross the streets. He will display his invention at the Consumer Electronics Show of Las Vegas next January 7-10.
The sonar infrared eye glasses have an electronic card and sound signals covering a several meter radius.
The three different types of signals warn the user of the presence of obstacles, the end of the pavement or that a car is coming, the inventor, Mohamed Oumane, told "Le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb" daily.
The device does not consume much electronic power as most of its components are equipped with an integrated circuit fed by a tiny battery. The frame is shock-proof and corrosion-resistant.
