GCC calls for peaceful solution for the Iraqi crisis

The Gulf Cooperation Council GCC today called for a peaceful solution for the crisis between Iraq and UNSCOM. It expressed hope to conclude positive steps that conducive to lifting the embargo imposed on Iraq.

The United Arab Emirates UAE foreign minister Rashid Abdullah was quoted as saying during the opening session of the GCC foreign ministers in Abu Dhabi that the "current crisis between Iraq and the UN can be sorted out by diplomatic means and honoring UN Security Council resolutions concerned." The UAE minister expressed hope to reach positive steps that lead to lifting the embargo imposed on Iraq and thereby alleviating the humanitarian sufferings of the people of Iraq.

He, at the same time stressed that Iraq has to oblige itself to commit to implementing international legitimacy resolutions and to continue its cooperation with the UN.
