Eritrea to continue support for Sudanese opposition
Sudan-Eritrea, Politics, 11/13/1998
The Sudanese opposition had underestimated the significance of the memorandum of understanding signed on Monday between Sudan and Eritrea under the initiative of Qatar.
The representative of the Democratic National Coalition in Cairo Ahmad al-Sanjak said that the announcement made by the Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Othman Ismael and his Eritrea's counterpart Hayli Wild Tensaei to continue their contacts to settle the conflicts imply their failure to settle the outstanding problems.
On the impact of the memorandum of understanding on Eriterea's relations with the Sudanese opposition, al-Sanjak explained that the opposition " received assertion from the Eritrean President Asyas Afeworki to continue his support for the Sudanese people." He stressed the military operations carried out by the opposition" are launched from the liberated Sudanese territories."
In Khartoum, the leader of the Sudanese opposition inside the country Ghazi Suleiman on Wednesday reacted to threats made by officials in the ruling "national conference" of a "legal trial of those who support terrorism." Suleiman explained that the opposition inside Sudan supports the decisions taken by the opposition outside the country, on restoring democracy. He added the opposition wants to work for realizing this objective by peaceful means."
Suleiman stressed rejection for the "threats voiced by the national conference." He added the "national coalition to restore democracy" which he presides over, "proceeds in its program which calls for restoring freedoms, abrogating freedom restricting laws and the return back of pluralism."
In his statements, Suleiman replied to press statements made by chairman of the political department at the national conference Muhammad al-Hassan al-Amin. The latter denounced the support of the opposition inside the country to the decisions concluded by the conference of the opposition's "Democratic National Coalition." Suleiman explained that the "national coalition" has voiced support for decisions of the Asmara conference pertaining to democracy and the call for a "constitutional conference to be followed by setting up a provisional government which calls for general election."
Meanwhile, The Secretary General of the Arab league (AL) Esmat Abdul Meguid on Thursday praised the efforts made by Qatar and resulted in signing the memorandum of understanding between Eriterea and Sudan whose diplomatic relations were severed in 1994.
The AL chief added that the recent accord between Sudan and Eriterea under the supervision of Qatar is considered an important step in the right direction. He expressed hope that this step will be "a new attitude for cooperation and reconciliation relations between Sudan and Eriterea for the interests of the two countries and for establishing security and stability in the horn of Africa."
