Moroccan party says there is no place in the region for puppet entity
Morocco, Politics, 11/12/1998
There is no place in the Maghreb region for the emergence of a puppet entity, said Moroccan "Party for Progress and Socialism" (PPS/former communist Party).
In a statement published Wednesday by its daily "Al Bayane," the party, which is represented in the present socialist-led coalition government, said Moroccans are convinced of the fairness and legitimacy of their cause and are resolved to complete the (UN) settlement process, provided that it meets all the fairness and credibility criteria.
The PPS statement was published on the occasion of the UN Secretary general's visit in the north African region. The visit was cut short on Thursday due to the new Iraq-UN standoff.
The PPS said the UN should be aware that Morocco is not envisioning any solution other than a referendum in which all persons meeting the five UN identification criteria are allowed to take part. For the PPS, the Sahara issue is a sequel of the cold war and this element should be taken into account in handling the issue.
Everybody should be aware that Morocco remains attached to international legality and is faithful to its historical role of consolidating stability in the region at the service of lofty human ideals: justice, progress and peace, the PPS politburo concluded.
For the Moroccan media which widely covered Annan's visit and seized this opportunity to re-affirm the Moroccans' unanimity over the issue, Annan's visit to the region has helped him find out about a number of geographic, historical and popular realities, that confirm, if need be, that the Sahara is Moroccan territory.
