Al-Shara in Doha: We need a united Arab stand
Syria-Regional, Politics, 11/11/1998
Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara arrived in Doha on Tuesday to chair his country's delegation to the meetings of the foreign ministers of the Damascus Declaration signatory states due to have started earlier today in Doha.
In arrival statements to the press, al-Shara expressed hope the meeting will be of good results, not of benefits to the Declaration signatory states, but rather to all the Arab states. He added "We are in need of Arab solidarity and a united Arab stand. We are also in need of a united vision towards all arising challenges." The Syrian Foreign Minister added that there are real risks which threaten the Arab national security. He stressed the need that the declaration states will be aware of this fact and to react accordingly to preserve Arab security.
Replying toanother question, on Syria's stand concerning the convening of an Arab Summit, al-Shara added "such a summit is always needed and that the most important is the result which will be attained by this summit. He asserted the need that the summit will be a frame to unite Arabs rather than increasing disputes or making matters facing the Arab countries more complicated."
