Hariri: We refuse security for peace formula
Lebanon, Politics, 11/11/1998
Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri has reiterated commitment of both Syria and Lebanon to the Madrid terms of reference and on just and comprehensive peace according to the land for peace formula and to resume negotiations with Israel on the two tracks (Syrian and Lebanese) from the point they broke off.
Following his meeting with the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo on Tuesday, the Lebanese Prime Minister said that talks dealt with a general analysis of the peace process and the recent Wye Plantation agreement signed between the Palestinians and the Israelis. He added the Israeli government resorts to deception in the said agreements. Al- Hariri stressed Lebanon's right to restore its lands and to be fairly dealt with its case in the complaint to the UN Security Council on Israel's stealing of the Lebanese soil from the occupied part of South Lebanon.
In other press statements, al-Hariri stressed the principle of "land for security is rejected by both Syria and Lebanon." In a statement to the Egyptian TV al-Hariri stressed the need of adherence to the land for peace principle and Israel's complete withdrawal from the occupied Syrian territories until the June 4, 1967 border line and from the Lebanese territories according to international agreements and the UN resolution 425.
Al-Hariri asserted that just and comprehensive peace can guarantee peace for all. He called for economic cooperation between Arab states and to give up inter-Arab marginal differences in the interests of all Arabs. He indicated the positive steps in the Lebanese-Egyptian economic cooperation.
