Israel escalates aggressions against south Lebanon

Israeli occupation forces on Thursday continued attacks against areas adjacent to the occupied part of south Lebanon and its western Bekaa. Lebanese security sources said that the Israeli artillery positioned in al-Zafata on Thursday afternoon bombarded al-Tuffah district, and Habboush river area.
Earlier in the day, the Israeli artillery shelled al-Rafee mountain and al-Zahrani river course in al-Tuffah district.
The bombardment covered the heights of al-Daher mountain, Lucy farm and the surroundings of Meimas and Qelya villages in the western Bekaa. The bombardment was coordinated with air sorties carried out by Israeli helicopters along the border area.
Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation forces intensively shelled the western sector of south Lebanon. Lebanese security sources said the "enemy artillery bombardment" targeted Jib Sweid, al-Rahrah, the outskirts of Majdal Zoun and al-Azyeh towns and Zibqin.
The Israeli warplanes carried out mock provocative raids over the areas of the central Bekaa and dropped thermal balloons. The Israeli warplanes were intercepted by the Lebanese army anti-aircraft artillery.
In retaliation the Lebanese resistance attacked the Israeli occupation forces inside Balat position in the occupied part of south Lebanon. Lebanese resistance sources said one of its groups attacked a site for the occupation position's vehicles inside al-Radar position. Direct hits were achieved.
Meanwhile, mothers of Lebanese detainees in Israeli jails on Thursday carried out a sit-in in front of the headquarters of UNIFIL in Tyre in south Lebanon. The sit-in was attended by representatives of social parties and commissions.
Participants in the sit-in delivered a memorandum to the spokesman for UNIFIL, Taimour Goskil including names of children held in the Israeli occupation jails. The memorandum called for releasing all elderly, girls and hospitalized detainees held in al-Khiam prison as well for as putting an end to torture and acts of violence conducted against those detainees.
Some 135 soldiers from the Indian contingent out of 670 which will replace the Norwegian unit in UNIFIL arrived in Beirut on Thursday night. All the soldiers are expected to arrive in south Lebanon before the end of 1998.
