Syrian defense minister congratulates Lebanese President-elect Lahoud
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 11/4/1998

Syrian Defense Minister Lt. Gen. Mustafa Tlass on Tuesday visited Lebanese President-elect Emil Lahoud in Beirut and congratulated him on being elected President of Lebanon.

Tlass and his companions, senior Syrian army officers, wished Lahoud all success in leading "brotherly Lebanon with dignity and pride and towards liberating south Lebanon from the brutal Israeli occupation."

Earlier in the day, Tlass visited one of the Syrian armed forces' combat units in Lebanon. He was accompanied by a number of senior General Command's officers. Tlass talked about developments in the region and the state of the Middle East peace process following the Wye Plantation accord signed by the Palestinian Authority and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud government.

Tlass said: "Due to humiliating concessions given by the Palestinian Authority, new acts of aggression, oppression and settlement are being stepped up by Israel against the people of Palestine."

He added that recent Israeli intransigence and challenges facing the entire Arab states require Arab solidarity to confront those challenges. The Syrian defense minister reiterated that Syria is working for "genuine peace based on justice and on giving each party its right due to the provisions of UN resolutions and the land-for-peace formula."
