Peking backs Rabat's effort to restore Morocco's legitimate rights
Morocco-China, Politics, 11/3/1998
China said it supports Morocco's efforts to recover its legitimate rights.
"China backs Morocco in its efforts to restore its legitimate rights" Chinese ambassador to Morocco Mu Wen told "Le Matin Du Sahara et du Maghreb" daily.
In an interview on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Morocco and China, Mu Wen said the Chinese people is indebted to Morocco, "which had helped China return to its legitimate seat at the United Nations."
He underlined that the Moroccan people, under the leadership of King Hassan II, defended national sovereignty and contributed to consolidating Arab-African solidarity and the peace process in the Middle-East.
The diplomat added that, "Moroccan-Chinese political ties are founded on strong bases." He recalled, in this regard, that Morocco was the second country in Africa, after Egypt, that established diplomatic relations with Peking, "despite obstacles and pressures."
The bilateral economic and commercial cooperation relations are currently extended to larger sectors, he said.
Trade between the two countries progressed considerably during the last decade to exceed 1 billion dirhams in 1997, representing a 53 percent increase compared to the previous year.
China is one of Morocco's trade partners and aid donors. It provides the kingdom with valuable technical assistance, mainly in the fields of vocational training, traditional medicine, sports and dams infrastructure, silk-worm breeding and tea farming.
Moroccan exports to China are made up mainly of Phosphates, fertilizers and chemicals, while its imports consist mostly of tea, machinery, pottery, electronic and electricity products.
In a bid to give new momentum to these relations, Moroccan Prime Minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi will visit China during this month.
