Lebanese resistance escalates attacks against Israeli troops
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 11/3/1998
Lebanese resistance forces on Monday foiled an attempt carried out by an Israeli commando force to advance to the axis of Western Bekaa. Lebanese security sources said a group of Lebanese fighters confronted the Israeli force. Clashes erupted between the two sides. The confrontation forced the Israeli force to go back to the occupied part of south Lebanon.
The sources continued that a number of casualties were inflicted upon the Israeli force, which was supported by Israeli warplanes and heavy artillery that shelled the area with 155-caliber rockets.
Further, reports said the Lebanese resistance ambushed an Israeli infantry force that was patrolling in Aqmata plain in the central sector of south Lebanon. Meanwhile, Israeli warplanes continued to carry out raids against the western Bekaa in eastern Lebanon. The planes fired air to surface missiles against the target area, and units of the Lebanese army intercepted the planes. No information was immediately available about the damage.
The resistance group machine-gunned and rocketed the Israeli infantry force. The occupation troops shelled the area with smoke bombs to evacuate casualties. Two Israeli positions in "Beer Klab" and Sujoud tried to assist the force but were attacked by another Lebanese resistance group.
Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation forces continued bombing the western Bekaa and the hills of the al-Tuffah district. Several villages in the area were subject to intensified shelling, and a number of houses and cars were damaged. The bombardment was accompanied by heavy machine-gun fire from the troops against roads and hilly passages linking the al-Tuffah district with the occupied part of south Lebanon.
