Jordan warns Hamas against launching attacks, statements from its territories
Jordan, Politics, 11/3/1998

Jordanian Information Minister Nasser Joudeh said that "Jordan will not accept to be a base for any outlaws' statements or those calling for violence." This was in an implicit warning to the Palestinian Hamas movement.

In a statement issued by the Jordanian daily al-Rai, Joudeh stressed Jordan's position in recognizing the Palestinian Authority as the sole and legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. He added that within this context Jordan deals with the Palestinian Authority rather with any other side.

He denied that Hamas has its a leadership in Jordan, adding, "There are Jordanian citizens who are close to Hamas, ideologically and politically." He went on, "Statements which surpass the law and provoke violence in any form, are categorically forbidden."
