Morocco voices will to consolidate cooperation with China
Morocco-China, Politics, 10/31/1998

Morocco expressed firm determination to consolidate cooperation and partnership ties with China.

"I would like to assure you that our determination will remain firm and that our efforts will be constant for the consolidation and enlarging of the scope of cooperation and partnership between our two countries," Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Abdellatif Filali said in a message to his Chinese peer, Tang Jiaxuan.

Morocco and China will commemorate on November 1 the 40th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic ties.

Morocco is the 2nd Arab and African country after Egypt to set up diplomatic ties with China in 1958.

Filali expressed Morocco's satisfaction over the steps made so far towards closer friendship and cooperation relations between the two countries. These relations "are marked by the promotion of join interests and mutual respect," Filali said.

"The record of relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the People's Republic of China is rich with achievements in political, economic, commercial, cultural and social fields, thanks to permanent high solicitude of the two countries' leaders," the foreign minister said.

In a similar message to Filali, Tang Jiaxuan stressed Beijing's determination to consolidate relations with Morocco.

"Throughout the past 40 years, China and Morocco had excellent ties in conformity with the principles of peaceful coexistence despite the turbulence that marked the international scene," Jiaxuan said.

In a bid to give a new momentum to these relations, Moroccan Premier Abderrahmane Youssoufi will visit China next month.Cultural, artistic and commercial events will also be held in both countries to highlight the shared legacy, show their economic potentials and promote their partnership in various sectors of common concern.

Trade exchanges between Morocco and China progressed considerably during the last decade to exceed 1 billion dirhams (1 dlr is roughly 9.1 dh) in 1997 representing a 53 percent increase compared to the previous year.

China is one of Morocco's trade partners and aid donors. It provides the kingdom with valuable technical assistance mainly in the fields of vocational training, traditional medicine, sports and dams infrastructure, silk-worm breeding and tea farming.

Moroccan exports to China are made up mainly of phosphates, fertilizers and chemicals, while its imports consist mostly of tea, machinery, pottery, electronic and electricity products.
