A link between Lebanon bomb and Israel's bomb ?

Today, an Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman said that Foreign Minister Ariel Sharon believes it has been conclusively proven that the target of the attack, which killed the attacker and an Israeli soldier, was a school bus carrying schoolchildren.

The attack took place as a car loaded with explosives rammed an Israeli Army jeep that was escorting two Israeli school buses in the Gaza Strip that had just left an Israeli settlement, Voice of America reported. The military wing of the Palestinian Hamas organization took responsibility for the attack.

The attack comes amid high tensions in Palestinian and Israeli areas after the signing of the Wye agreement on second-phase troop withdrawal from the West Bank.

The attack also follows a car bombing on Tuesday in the Lebanese city of Sidon that targeted a Palestinian Islamic Jihad official, wounding him and his family. The attack has been characterized as an Israeli assassination attempt.

Palestinian sources stated that Israel carried out the operation inside the Lebanese territories aimed at assassinating an official in the Islamic Jihad movement in Palestine.

The sources said that the bomb that exploded the official's car in Sidon due to which the Islamic Jihad official, his wife and their child were injured, as well as a Lebanese citizen who works in a printing house near the site of the explosion was the work of Israel.

The sources said that the commander of the Israeli naval forces supervised the operation, which was undertaken by commandos affiliated to the Israeli naval forces.

Updated: Meanwhile, in comments to the press, Israel's navy commander Admiral Alex Tal on Tuesday said that the navy had been successful in stopping Lebanese guerrillas from infiltrating Israel by sea. The Lebanese Daily Star today quoted the commander as saying "Just last week they carried out a successful raid, but I won't elaborate on that."

No overt naval operations against Lebanon has taken place recently.
