Forum urges rational management of water resources

The third Mediterranean Agricultural Forum on Tuesday emphasized the urgent need for a rational and sustainable management of water resources in order to guarantee their renewal, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

A final joint statement said the two-day forum, whose theme was the use of water in agriculture, called for preservation of water in consideration of the increasing needs of water in the near future.

The forum called for the introduction in each country of a single water authority which, in cooperation with the World Water Council, would contribute to achieving all the objectives brought up during the meeting, said the statement.

It added the forum examined the situation of water resources in several Mediterranean countries and the legislation on the use of water in agriculture.

It said the forum was satisfied with the participation, for the first time, of parliamentarians from most Mediterranean countries and from non-member countries of the European Council.

The forum was organized by the Committee of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Council, in cooperation with the Mediterranean Committee of the International Federation of Agricultural Producers and the International Center for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies.

Delegates from Egypt, Jordan, Albania, Israel, Morocco, Ireland, Britain, Poland, France, Sweden, Italy, Spain, Tunisia, the Czech Republic, Macedonia, Cyprus and the Palestinian National Authority attended the meeting.
