Arab League chief calls for unified foreign policy
Regional, Politics, 10/29/1998

Arab League Secretary-General Esmat Abdul Meguid underlined Wednesday the need to devise a united Arab foreign policy to bolster joint Arab action in a changing world.

In a speech delivered on his behalf in Cairo during a symposium on "Upgrading Arab Diplomatic performance to challenge world changes," he called for reaching the difficult formula that matches theoretical interests with Pan-Arab targets.

He said Arab diplomacy faces the need for having access to technology and newly introduced ideas such as globalization and competing in the international economy.

He underlined the economic perspective as part of the Arab diplomatic drive noting that the Arab free trade zone represented the proper track for establishing the Arab common market.

The two-day symposium is organized by the Arab League to discuss Arab diplomacy-related issues.
