El-Mahdi refuses call to discuss political succession law
Sudan, Politics, 10/28/1998
Former prime minister and leader of the Sudanese opposition Ummah Party Sadek El-Mahdi refused a call directed to him by the Sudanese government to discuss a draft law regulating political succession, and allowing the establishment of political parties.
El-Mahdi said that the opposition rejected the constitution ratified this summer, and he asked how anybody can take part in supplementary meetings without political liberties.
El-Mahdi added that the opposition is pursuing its efforts to establish a democratic multiple-party system based on equal rights for citizens and respect of human rights in addition to the charters upon which the Sudanese people have agreed.
