Libya continues efforts to obtain guarantees for Lockerbie suspects

Ambassador Salma Rashid, Libya's delegate to the Arab League, stated after her meeting yesterday with Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa that efforts to obtain guarantees for the Libyan citizens accused in the Lockerbie case before handing them over to the Dutch authorities are continuing.
Rashid pointed to the existence of a Libyan team in New York to hold talks with the United Nations to discuss the legal a aspects of holding the trial.
The US last week met with the families of the victims of the Lockerbie incident where US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright told them that the US is waiting on the United Nations to issue clarifications on concerns raised by Libya. These concerns relate to safeguarding the rights of the suspects that would be tried if Libya approves of the trial. The familities expressed support for the US policy on this issue the State department said.
Meanwhile, Rashid denied that there is "alienation" in the relations between Tripoli and Cairo and said that the coming period will view important developments.
