Arab League, Qatar calls for peace negotiations on the Syrian track
Regional, Politics, 10/26/1998

The Arab League yesterday highlighted the importance of resuming negotiations on the Syrian track of the peace process with Israel from the point at which they stopped.

The Arab League emphasized its adherence to an Israeli withdrawal from the entire occupied Golan to June 1967 borders and the immediate implementation of UN Security Council resolutions on Israeli withdrawal from south Lebanon.

Arab League Secretary-General Esmat Abdul Meguid described last week's Israeli - Palestinian agreement as an important step that requires honest implementation by the Israeli government.

He also said it is important to use international pressure to resolve final status issues through Israeli withdrawal from all occupied Arab lands and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

Meanwhile, Qatar officially gave support yesterday to the Israeli - Palestinian agreement that was signed on last Friday in the U.S.A.

Abdul Aziz al-Kawari, the spokesman of the Qatari Foreign Ministry, described the agreement as an important step in the right direction toward reaching final status negotiations on the Palestinian territories.

He expressed his hope that the agreement would lead to activating and motivating the peace process in the Middle East on all tracks, especially the Syrian and the Lebanese tracks, to establish a just and comprehensive peace in the area.
