Commander of US fleet concludes visit to Sanaa
Yemen-USA, Military, 10/24/1998
Commander of the US Fifth Fleet, Admiral Charles Moore on Thursday concluded a visit to Sanaa during which he discussed US -Yemeni military cooperation.
During his meeting with the US Admiral, Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh discussed means of strengthening Yemeni- US relations in various areas, especially in the military field.
During his visit, Admiral Moore who resides in Bahrain, met with the Yemeni minister of transport, the former army chief of staff Lt. Gen. Abdul Malik al-Seyani, and discussed with him prospects for cooperation in marine monitoring, and the visit the Admiral made to the training center for landmine dismantling in Aden, the largest city in southern Yemen.
This visit, however, coincided with a statement released by the US embassy in Sanaa, in which the US denied the existence of any US military base in Aden and statements made by western diplomats that the US seeks to use the port of Aden as a center for supplying the US Fifth Fleet.
Last May, the Yemeni president denied news reported by Yemeni dailies that Sanaa intends to give marine facilities to the US. Saleh stressed his country's "refusal to give any sort of facilities."
