Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said concerning the direct meeting that is to be held between officials in Syria and Turkey that all the information Egypt has confirms the possibility of convening such an agreement in Cairo. He said he hopes that this meeting will allow understanding and dialogue between Turkey and Syria, adding that direct talks and diplomatic means are the core of the initiative suggested by Egyptian diplomacy in this regard. US Assistant Secretary of State for the Near East David Welch said yesterday that the US-brokered agreement between two Iraqi Kurdish factions has the primary goal of regional security, saying, "We do believe that the security of everyone in the area is better if there is a basic understanding between the two principal Kurdish parties in northern Iraq, and that includes the security of Turkey." US State Department spokesman James Rubin said today that the focus of the peace talks at the Wye Plantation is to get "the pieces necessary to put the peace process back on track." He did not confirm that there would be a comprehensive agreement that would lead to final status talks between the Israelis and Palestinians. He added the US has been seeking the advice of the Egyptians. King Hussein of Jordan will also play a positive role in the talks, making for a "three-way tag team diplomacy." Go

Kurdish sources in Cairo denied the presence of the Kurdish Workers Party's chief, Abdullah Oclan, in Syria, saying that he is currently somewhere in Kurdistan. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi offered support to Syria and Turkey to solve the conflict between them resulting from Turkey's allegation that Syria supports the separatist Kurdish Workers Party. Egyptian Minister of Interior Habib El-Adli announced yesterday that security bodies are about to root out terrorist nests, adding that what has been achieved recently came as the result of collective police work. El-Adli described the security situation in Egypt as an achievement, adding that it is due to the efforts exerted by policemen and to citizens' response. Go
