16th century village to be rehabilitated
Morocco, Culture, 10/20/1998
Marrakesh hosted this October 16-18 a seminar on a project to rehabilitate the village of Tamesloht, 20 km from Marrakesh.
The village of Tamesloht, site of the marabou Moulay Abdallah Ben H'sain, the saint of 366 sciences, knew better days when it acted for several centuries as a political, economic and religious pole, reaching its apogee in the 19th century.
Today, the city is deserted by most of its inhabitants who went to work in Marrakesh. Its once radiant casbah, with its glazed tiled roof, unique suspended gardens, internal gardens, is now falling into decay. A Moroccan association, supported by the European Union and the UN Development Program, has designed an "eco-development" project to rehabilitate the locality and restore its tourism calling, while avoiding to turn the village into a "Disneyland."
