Lebanese parliament amends constitution
Lebanon, Politics, 10/14/1998
The Lebanese Parliament on Tuesday ratified a constitutional amendment to pave the way for the election of Lebanese Army Commander Gen. Emil Lahoud as president of Lebanon.
The 128-member legislature is to meet tomorrow (Thursday) to elect Lahoud after outgoing President Elias Hrawi signs the one-time-only constitutional amendment.
A total of 113 deputies voted for the amendment and four deputies against the amendment of article 49 of the constitution, which bans senior civil servants from running for presidency.
Lahoud as a new President will be sworn in November 24, the day when President Hrawi leaves office. Hrawi has served for nine years. This period includes a three year of extension that started in 1995 to his original six-year term of office.
