Regional, Politics, 10/13/1998

The Islamic research center under the chairmanship of the Great Imam Mohamed Sayed Tantawi, issued a statement yesterday after the urgent meeting of the center's members on Turkey's position toward Syria and the Serbian position toward Kosovo.

The statement stated that Al Azhar is very sorry and upset over what is generally happening in the world, specifically the Islamic world, where Al Azhar hopes for unity in the world and the advancement of human and Islamic brotherhood.

The Great Imam called for unity as it is "obligatory," moreover the statement supported the efforts of President Mubarak and Saudi Arabia's King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz and their permanent endeavors to unify and bring closer Moslems of the world.

Tantawi urged Syria and Turkey to consider the matters in their dispute more logically and wisely, trying to prevent bloodshed.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia on Monday reasserted its call for settling the disputes between Syria and Turkey by peaceful means and by refraining from threats to use force.

"Such threats contradict the joint interests of the neighboring Muslim countries," it said. In a statement issued at the conclusion of the Saudi Cabinet meeting presided over by King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz, Saudi Arabia reiterated its hope for solving the dispute between the two sides by peaceful means, dialogue and understanding.

"Any threats to use force do not serve the common interests of the two Muslim countries," the statement said.
