Morocco joins Belgian charter on languages and cultures of origin
Morocco-Belgium, Education, 10/10/1998
Moroccan Education Minister Ismail Alaoui signed in Brussels Thursday the Belgian charter on languages and cultures of origin.
Under the charter, Morocco and Belgium will cooperate in promoting the harmonious development of children of Moroccan expatriates in Belgium, through basic and secondary education. Moroccan teachers are associated with Belgian educators to develop an inter-cultural pedagogy.
Moroccan children living in Belgium will therefore attend for a weekly minimum of two hours courses on the cultures of their country of origin and of their host country. Teachers involved in this program are free to give these courses in Arabic or in French.
The ELCO charter has already been signed by Greece, Italy, Portugal and Turkey.
ELCO programs are aimed at improving the social integration of expatriate children and promoting social coherence of youth speaking various languages.
The Moroccan official will also review with his Flemish peer a program to fight illiteracy among Moroccan parents living in Belgium and a project to promote rural education. He will chair a meeting with Moroccan teachers in the European country, gathered within the standing coordination advisory assembly.
