France questions Cairo on French - Egyptian initiative
Egypt-France, Politics, 10/10/1998

A French diplomatic source in Cairo confirmed to ArabicNews.com today that his country has asked Cairo about the declarations that if the US succeeded in breaking the deadlock in the Middle East peace process there will be no need to hold an international peace conference, which is the Egyptian - French initiative.

An Egyptian source said the deadlock means the whole peace process, not only on the Palestinian track but also on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks, so breaking it means the progress along all tracks.

The sources added that abandoning the idea of holding a conference in the case of reaching a Palestinian - Israeli agreement to carry out the second phase of redeployment in the West Bank according to the US initiative is not suggested, because the aim is to rescue the peace process not to guarantee another redeployment.

He also said that Egypt aims to move the Lebanese and Syrian tracks forward, thus no just or comprehensive peace could be established without a final settlement, confirming that the international conference is a continuation of the US efforts.
