Iran-Afghanistan, Politics, 10/5/1998
The envoy of the United Nations secretary-general who is authorized by the case of El-Akhdar El-Ibrahimi arrived at Teheran, coming from the Emirates, as the first visit to by international envoy since the crisis between the Afghan Taleban movement and Iran broke out.
Teheran greatly welcomed the visit and the efforts made by the UN to put an end for Taleban movement's actions, which resulted in the death of Iranian civilians.
El-Ibrahim praised the Organization of the Islamic Conference's efforts and their delegation that is accompanying him to Teheran, confirming that his mission aims at efforts to end the crisis which will greatly affect the whole area.
After his meeting with the international envoy, the Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharazi emphasized that his country is waiting for the Taleban to follow international laws and the outcomes of the New York meeting that was attended by the U.S., Iran, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikestan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Kharazi didn't expand on whether this was an Iranian warning for punishing Taleban or not, but his warnings coincide with the first stage for Zo El-Fakar maneuvers on the borders with Afghanistan.
Meanwhile Kharazi asked the international community to take practical punitive steps if the Taleban fails to abide by UN's decision.
