Mubarak, King Fahd discuss Syrian-Turkish crisis
Egypt-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 10/5/1998

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Saturday held a sudden and very short visit to Saudi Arabia. The standing tension between Syria and Turkey was at the forefront of issues addressed between President Mubarak and King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz along with other Saudi officials.

Saudi television said that President Mubarak was accompanied by a high-ranking official delegation comprising Foreign Minister Amr Moussa, and Information Minister Safwat al-Sharif, adding that upon his arrival the Egyptian president met with King Fahd, in the presence of the Saudi Defense Minister Prince Sultan and Minister of the Interior Prince Nayef.

Saudi television added that the two sides discussed Arab and Islamic issues but gave no more details.

During his visit to Riyadh, President Mubarak made telephone calls to Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and Turkish President Suleiman Demirel.

Following the meeting, Prince Sultan expressed hope that "the efforts which have been made by both King Fahd and President Mubarak would help in defusing the crisis" in the Syrian-Turkish relations.

He, on the other hand, downplayed the level of this crisis, adding that it will be eliminated through the two countries' resorting to reason and logic.
