Joint Jordanian - Syrian committee to discuss bilateral topics
Jordan-Syria, Politics, 10/5/1998

The Jordanian daily al-Rai said on Sunday said that Jordanian - Syrian contacts had started recently with the objective of setting a date for the meeting of the Jordanian-Syrian joint committee on al-Wahda (Unity) Dam and other topics.

The paper quoted the secretary-general of Jordan Valley Authority, Durid Mahasenah, as saying that Jordan sent the Syrians a new "feasibility study" prepared by the authority on the cost of setting up al-Wahda dam and to agree on a meeting to discuss it.

He added that the first "feasibility study" on the project needed to be redone because it was based on figures and statistics from the mid 1980s.

He said the next meeting of the joint committee is expected to be carried out this year and will also discuss environmental topics between the two countries.
