Moroccan culture minister meets French Communist Party delegation
Morocco-France, Politics, 10/1/1998

Moroccan minister of cultural affairs, Mohamed Achaari, met here Tuesday with a visiting delegation of the French Communist Party (PCF).

The minister surveyed before his French interlocutors the department's actions and projects and the concern to involve all components of Moroccan society in cultural actions. He pointed out that his ministry has signed several conventions with other departments (education, Islamic affairs, youth and sports and tourism).

The PCF delegation, which visited Morocco on September 28-29 at the invitation of Moroccan former Communist Party (Party for Progress and Socialism) expressed the party's wish to contribute to the success of Morocco's political experience, marked by the appointment of a former opposition leader to head a coalition government and push forward the Euro-Mediterranean agreement.

"We wish to contribute to the success of this experience," said Euro-deputy and member of the PCF's national bureau in charge of external relations, Francis Wurlz, who is leading the delegation.

He added that in cooperation with the USFP (Socialist Union of Popular Forces), the PI (Istiqlal Party) and the PPS (Party for Progress and Socialism), three parties represented in the government, the PCF will try to promote joint ideas, including the Euro-Mediterranean agreement. He argued that Morocco should be assisted in developing its human resources, infrastructure and agricultural and industrial sectors.

The PCF official also dwelt on the challenges facing the new government, including globalization, international competitiveness and the indebtedness which weighs heavily on the country's development capacities. He also described as "very important" the visit to France on October 1-2 of Prime Minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi.

The delegation members also met with the prime minister and several members of the socialist-led coalition government.
