Islamic era archeologic site unearthed in Morocco
Morocco, Culture, 9/30/1998
A team of archeologists announced they have unearthed important archeologic sites in Mohammedia (70 km south of Rabat).
The team said the sites are dating back to the Islamic era and had been mentioned in an old history book by Al-Idrissi.
One of the sites contains ruins of a fortress, two buildings and other constructions. Another site was described by the historiographer as a relay for tradesmen between Marrakesh and Sale (near Rabat).
The archeologists said this site extending over 15 hectares contains a fortress, ruins of grain storehouses, walls, an over and three necropoles.
The team said they have also found earthenware items that prove Al-Idrissi statements that the village was a relatively thriving center.
The sites were plundered by the region inhabitants who used the stone in construction. The archeologists could recover objects found on the site, such as coins and jewellery items.
