Morocco, Economics, 9/29/1998
The transport sector accounts for 6 percent of Morocco's gross domestic product (GDP), the Moroccan transport and merchant navy minister said.
Mustapha Mansouri told a round table held in Casablanca by "the Economist Conferences" that the transport sector, which posted an average annual increase of 5 percent during the previous decade, accounts for 25 percent of the national energy consumption and provides jobs to 6 percent of the active working population.
Transport and communication fees represent 5.2 percent of households' expenditures, compared to 4.9 percent in Tunisia and 13.4 percent in France.
Morocco has 60,000 km of roads used by 1.5 million vehicles and a railway network of 1,907 km (including 1,007 km of electrified rails). Morocco also has 11 commercial ports and 15 airports receiving regular flights.
