Growth rate in Tunisia is 5.3 percent
During the meeting with IMF delegation (International Monetary Fund) the Tunisian minister of economic development Tawfik Bakar stated that the the first two years of the 9th development plan (1997-2001) have been very positive and conforms to the planned targets, pointing out that the growth rate amounted to 5,3% and inflation was confined dues to the reasonable growth rate.

A three day conference about trade obstacles and their effect on the exports of the Mediterranean countries convened today in Cairo, organized by the Egyptian Ministry of Industry and the Islamic Development Bank in which nine Arab countries -- Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Libya, Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia, Syria, and Palestine, in addition to Turkey -- are participating. Soliman Reda, the Egyptian minister of industry, said today that during the conference the agreement of the World Trade Organization on the technical obstacles facing trade and its effect on the trade of developing countries will be discussed.

The World Bank granted Morocco a $4 Million for a rural reforestation project in the southern valley of Lakhdar.The project, worth $5.8 Million, consists in testing community approaches to land usage and management of natural resources in mountainous regions. The project includes reforestation, grazing improvement, the opening and maintenance of rural roads. Four communities hosting some 10,000 inhabitants will benefit from the project.

US Secretary of Defense William Cohen will arrive on Monday in Morocco at the conclusion of a tour that includes Portugal, Macedonia, Bosnia, and Italy. Moroccan sources told ArabicNews.com today that Cohen will participate in NATO meetings in Barcelona, after which he will inspect the US forces in the Balkans, who number 350 soldiers among the peacekeeping forces affiliated to the United Nations in Macedonia.
